What ꊒ means
ꊒ represents the Liangshan Yi syllable romanized as zie. Its sound is roughly “tse” with the vowel in “set,” held at a mid-level tone; ziex and ziep mark other tones in the standard romanization. These spellings label syllables, not English words, so the word-level meaning depends on surrounding Yi text.
Yi writing developed over time. Early inscriptions are reported on stone, bronze, pottery, and bone; the earliest reliably dated surviving examples are from the 15th century, including bell inscriptions. Older local forms were used by village priests for religious, magical, medical, genealogical, and other texts. The modern standard for the Liangshan dialect was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980, bringing Yi writing into official documents, newspapers, and literature.
