What ꊑ means

Enter ziex in a Yi input method and select ꊑ.

As of 2024-06-20, Microsoft's Windows Yi input method works one syllable at a time: type the Latin-letter spelling, then choose the matching Yi character from the suggestions.

On other systems, a Unicode character picker that searches code points can locate A291; display still requires a font with Yi coverage.

What does ꊑ mean?

It is one syllable in the standardized Liangshan Yi script.

The Latin-letter spelling ziex gives its Liangshan reading; final x marks the secondary-high tone. Yi characters represent syllables and stay separate rather than merging into a combined sign.

This standard represents the Liangshan variety; other Yi writing traditions can differ in character shapes, inventories and writing direction. Alone, ꊑ identifies a syllable, but its intended word and English translation depend on surrounding Yi text.

How did Yi writing reach this form?

The Liangshan standard is modern; Yi writing has a much longer history.

Some stone, bronze, pottery and bone objects from China's Western Han dynasty have been proposed as early examples of Yi writing. The oldest surviving example usually cited is an inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485; Yi manuscripts on paper or sheepskin appear around 1500.

Older Yi texts carried religious, magical, medical and genealogical knowledge, often passed on by village priests; inscriptions and possible administrative writing show wider uses. Regional forms differed in shapes, inventories and writing direction. The Liangshan standard, devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, drew on older writing traditions called Cuan and Wei and later served official documents, newspapers and literature.
