What ꊍ means
It stands for one high-tone syllable in written Nuosu Yi.
“zit” is its romanized label, not a translation. In Yiyu Pinyin, the final t marks high tone. Treat ꊍ as one syllable; its meaning depends on the complete Nuosu Yi word or sentence around it.
How did the Yi syllabary develop?
The standardized syllabary grew from older regional writing traditions.
The earliest securely dated surviving example of Yi writing is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485; that dates surviving evidence, not the script’s invention. Classical Yi writing varied by region. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, copied its forms for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. A standardized syllabary was introduced in the 1970s to improve literacy and became official for Liangshan Yi in 1980. It brought regional traditions, including signs used for ideas as well as sounds, toward a shared phonetic system where each sign represents a syllable.
This is specialized written Nuosu Yi; “zit” is a romanized label, not English prose.
In English, “zit” means a skin blemish; here it labels a Yi syllable.
