yi syllable we

Yi syllable we

652/1165

ꊋ is a Yi syllable written we in standard Liangshan romanization; its sound starts with voiced friction at the back of the mouth, then an unrounded “oo”-like vowel at mid pitch. In a Yi word, context gives it senses such as “strength,” “difficult,” or “win”; on its own, it has no single English translation.

What ꊋ means

ꊋ represents a Yi syllable, not one fixed English word. A romanization is a way to write sounds with Latin letters; standardized Liangshan romanization writes ꊋ as we. Its pronunciation is approximately [ɣɯ³³]: start with a voiced, raspy sound at the back of the mouth, then an unrounded vowel close to “oo,” with the pitch held around the middle of your voice. In this spelling, final t, x, and p mark other tones; ꊋ has none. Depending on the Yi word, its glosses include “strength,” “difficult,” and “win.”

By itself in a conversation, ꊋ gives no reliable clue to why it was sent. Ask which Yi word or sentence it belongs to before reading it as a personal message.

How does ꊋ fit into Yi writing history?

It grew from varied local Yi traditions into a standardized syllabary. A syllabary is a writing system whose signs represent syllables. A Yi origin story credits Aki with creating the writing during the Tang period, but does not establish a single historical inventor.

Local Yi forms were used by village priests for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts (records of family descent), rather than as one shared everyday script across Yi communities. The earliest surviving example is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485.

To improve literacy, the standardized Liangshan form was developed in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It draws on older Northern Yi forms and serves the Liangshan dialect, not every Yi variety. This syllabary continues an older Yi ideograph tradition, historically also called Cuan or Wei; those ideographs appear not to derive from Han Chinese characters.

Use ꊋ in Yi text or a clearly labeled script sample; outside that setting, the character alone does not identify a message.

A lone ꊋ cannot tell its reader what the sender intended.
