What ꊞ means
It represents the Nuosu syllable “zop” with a low-falling tone.
Yi Pinyin spells Nuosu syllables with Latin letters. zop gives a syllable reading, not an English gloss; the surrounding Yi text shows its role in a word.
Where does the standardized system come from?
The Liangshan/Nuosu standard draws forms from older local Yi traditions.
Traditional Yi writing varied by locality. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, used written forms for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. One historical account identifies a bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 as the earliest surviving example; other histories report claims of older inscriptions.
The standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It serves the Nuosu dialect, not all Yi languages.

1Why does ꊞ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
