What ꊟ means
It is a syllable sign in Yi writing, labeled zex. In the Liangshan romanization known as Yi Pinyin, the final x marks a secondary-high tone, a particular pitch pattern. The label gives a reading, not an English translation. Nuosu words take meaning from surrounding syllables, so ꊟ alone is not a complete message.
The earliest surviving Yi-script example cited by the Unicode Standard is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. Traditional forms varied by locality and writing direction; manuscripts preserved religious, magical, medical, and genealogical material.
How did Yi writing become standardized?
The standardized Liangshan Yi form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. The Liangshan romanization behind its syllable labels was introduced in 1956, so zex names a reading rather than a translation.
A 2024 Unicode proposal lists contemporary Sichuan Yi in religion, reference books, newspapers, education, novels, public signs, and video subtitles. The modern Liangshan standard grew from older local Yi traditions; it does not replace every local writing tradition or dialect.
Outside Yi text, ꊟ reads as an unexplained syllable sign; in Nuosu writing, surrounding syllables give it a word-level role.
A lone ꊟ is a syllable sample, not a complete word.
