What ꊠ means
It is the Liangshan Yi syllable “ze”; context supplies its word meaning.
In the standard romanization, “ze” identifies the syllable and its unmarked mid-level tone; final t, x, or p marks other tone categories. A tone is a pitch pattern that can distinguish words, so “ze” alone is not an English translation.
Where did the Yi script come from?
The Liangshan Yi standard grew from older, locally varied Yi writing.
A bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is identified as the earliest surviving monumental example of Yi writing. Other earlier objects have been proposed, but they do not establish when the tradition began. Traditional Yi signs were used by bimo priests—religious specialists—for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts.
The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It draws on older Northern Yi forms and is intended for the Liangshan variety, not every Yi variety. Its square appearance does not show descent from Chinese Han characters: traditional Yi signs are independent in origin.
Neutral in Yi writing; opaque without the sentence around it.

2Is ꊠ an emoji?
No. It is a text character used in the Liangshan Yi script, not an emoji.
Why does ꊠ look like a box?
The active font may lack a Yi glyph for it. The box is a missing-glyph placeholder, not the character’s own shape.
