What ꊨ means
Use a Yi input method and select ꊨ from its candidates.
Microsoft's Windows instructions from 2024 describe adding the Yi input method, entering romanized syllables, selecting a candidate, and confirming with Enter or Space. For this character, enter zyt; the final t marks high tone, a higher pitch on the syllable.
What does ꊨ mean by itself?
By itself, ꊨ is a syllable, not a complete translation.
It represents the Nuosu (Liangshan Yi) syllable entered as zyt; the surrounding Yi syllables make up the word or phrase. That input spelling is not an English gloss. In Yi text, read ꊨ as one piece of a sentence; context supplies its word-level meaning.
Did modern Yi replace older Yi writing?
It standardized one regional tradition; it did not erase every Yi script.
The earliest commonly cited dated example is a bronze bell from 1485, but the deeper origins of Yi writing remain debated. Older forms varied by region and were used especially by bimo, Yi ritual specialists, for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts.
The Liangshan Yi standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 for the Liangshan/Nuosu variety. It aimed to make Yi writing accessible beyond people trained by bimo and to support public documents, newspapers, literature, and the preservation of ritual texts. Other regions developed related but distinct standards, including one in Yunnan; ꊨ belongs to the Liangshan standard, not every Yi writing tradition.
Neutral and language-specific: ꊨ belongs in Yi text or discussion of the Liangshan/Nuosu syllabary, not as a generic reaction.
One syllable has no standalone English translation and does not represent every Yi writing tradition.
