What ꋓ means
It writes one spoken syllable in Liangshan Yi. The Liangshan standard is a syllabary: a writing system where each sign represents one syllable. Its Latin-letter reading, “zzip,” ends in p to mark low-falling pitch. That spelling is a pronunciation guide, not an English translation; the Yi word’s meaning comes from context.
How did Liangshan Yi writing develop?
The modern Liangshan standard developed from Classical Yi writing. The earliest reliably dated surviving Yi inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485; many older Yi manuscripts are undated. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, preserved Classical Yi writing for scriptures, legends, medicine, astrology, and genealogies. The modern Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to broaden literacy and everyday education. Other Yi communities have distinct script traditions, so their syllable inventories and readings may differ.
