What ꋒ means

It writes one Liangshan Yi syllable.

“zzi” is the Liangshan romanized label, not an English meaning. A font without Yi glyph coverage may show a box.

How did the Yi script change?

Modern Yi syllables grew from older Yi writing.

Traditional Yi writing had many local forms. Village priests preserved religious, medical, and genealogical texts. One origin tradition credits Aki during the Tang period (618–907). The earliest surviving dated inscription is a bronze bell from 1485.

The standardized Liangshan syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980; it writes Liangshan Yi alone, not every Yi dialect.

Read ꋒ as one syllable in written Liangshan Yi.

A box means your font lacks Yi glyph coverage; the character remains ꋒ.

Why does ꋒ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
