What does the Adlam letter gbe represent?
It represents the consonant written gb in Latin-based Fulani spelling.
The language is called Fulfulde in central and eastern dialect areas, and Pular or Pulaar in western ones; English also uses Fula and Fulani. In the late 1980s, brothers Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry devised Adlam in Guinea to make Fulani writing easier to read. Earlier writers used Latin spelling and Ajami—Arabic letters adapted to write another language—but Ajami spellings varied and could be hard to decipher.
Arabic influenced Adlam’s right-to-left direction and letter joining, but its letterforms were designed separately. Adlam is used alongside Latin and Arabic-based writing.
Why does 𞤞 change shape in a word?
Cursive Adlam joins letters and adjusts their shapes by position.
Letters usually connect inside Adlam words, though unjoined writing also appears in books, titles, and teaching material.
In 2019, Unicode revised its sample Adlam letterforms after community feedback exposed ambiguity in earlier forms. Fonts can still draw the same character with different outlines.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𞤞 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
