arabic letter dal with two dots vertically below

Arabic Letter Dal with Two Dots Below

1/7

𐻂 is a Pegon letter that represents the voiced retroflex sound /ɖ/ in some manuscripts: a d sound made with the tongue curled slightly back. Pegon adapted Arabic writing for Javanese, Sundanese, and Madurese, first for Islamic learning and later for literature and documents. The two dots are one spelling choice; the surrounding orthography tells you how to read it.

What 𐻂 means

Some Pegon manuscripts use it for voiced retroflex /ɖ/. This Pegon letter represents a d sound made with the tongue curled slightly back. Other Pegon spellings mark the same sound with one or three dots below, so the dots reflect a spelling convention rather than a separate meaning.

Pegon adapts Arabic writing to languages including Javanese, Sundanese, and Madurese. It was used for Islamic learning and writing, and also for local literature, documents, and private letters. A 2022 Unicode proposal gives manuscript examples and cites a Pegon manual dated 1933.

A manuscript-specific Pegon spelling; use it when following a source's orthography.

Do not replace ordinary Arabic د unless the source's spelling calls for this letter.

Why is 𐻂 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
