Arabic Letter Hah Initial Form

ﺣ is the initial, position-shaped form of Arabic ḥāʾ, the letter ح. In ordinary Arabic text, type ح and let the shaping engine choose its form. Compatibility normalization can turn ﺣ into ح, removing the visual distinction.

Text symbol

What ﺣ means

Arabic shapes one letter according to its position and connections. ﺣ is the initial form of ح: it joins the following letter but not a preceding one. “Initial” describes how it connects, not a different sound or meaning.

For ordinary Arabic text, type ح and let the shaping engine select the form. ﺣ is a compatibility presentation form, intended to preserve a particular appearance in legacy or specialized text. Compatibility normalization can map it to ح, so its initial shape may disappear in search or text processing.

What is the history of Arabic ḥāʾ?

The letter evolved through Nabataean-Aramaic writing; this digital form came much later. A Nabataean ancestor is attested in an inscription dated 267 CE. The transition from Nabataean to Arabic script spans the third to fifth centuries CE, with dated inscriptions showing a full Arabic repertoire by the late fifth century CE. The connected letter was used to write a consonant; ﺣ is a later positional presentation form.

In Arabic, ح represents a voiceless pharyngeal fricative, a consonant made deep in the throat. In Urdu, ح appears in words borrowed from Arabic and is taught with an English-like breathy h. Persian generally keeps Arabic spelling in Arabic loanwords, while pronunciation follows the language.

Standalone ﺣ is technical and typographic, usually needed for a particular presentation form or legacy text.

For new Arabic text, use ح; normalization can remove ﺣ’s initial shape.

Questions people ask

1

Does the font create the initial Arabic shape?

Yes. In ordinary text, the shaping engine selects the contextual form from ح, so the initial outline usually is not stored as a separate character.
