arabic letter kaf final form

Arabic letter kāf, final form

106/140

For ordinary Arabic text, type the base letter ك and let Arabic shaping give it the final shape. This exact character is a compatibility form; by itself it is only a letterform, so the surrounding word or grammar supplies the meaning. The Arabic script developed through Nabataean Aramaic stages over centuries.

What ﻚ means

Use the base letter; let the text choose its shape.

In ordinary Arabic, use the base kāf, ك. Arabic text shaping looks at neighboring letters and draws the appropriate form, including a final shape when the letter ends a connected word. Use this pre-shaped character only when a legacy string, test fixture, or interchange requirement calls for that exact form.

Compatibility normalization such as NFKC or NFKD may turn this character into the base kāf. Check the result when exact character matching matters.

What does Arabic final kaf mean?

By itself, it is a letterform, not a complete Arabic word.

The underlying kāf carries the letter in Arabic words. In Arabic grammar, kāf can also mark comparison or appear in suffixes and forms of address, so the surrounding words and sentence determine its role.

The Arabic letter belongs to a script that developed from Nabataean Aramaic during the first half of the first millennium CE. A transitional Nabataeo-Arabic phase is described for the third to fifth centuries; the earliest dated inscriptions with a full Arabic letter set appear in the late fifth century CE.

Why does Arabic kāf change shape?

Its shape marks position and joining, not a different sound.

Kāf can join to letters on either side. At the end of a connected word, it joins only to the preceding letter, so Arabic shaping selects the final form. The ordinary base kāf and this final form are two shapes of the same letter.

Arabic presentation forms were encoded for compatibility with older character encodings. For normal Arabic text, base letters and contextual shaping are the standard approach.

In ordinary Arabic prose, this explicit form reads as a technical or legacy encoding choice.

Questions people ask

3

Is final kaf a word?

No. It is a word-final letterform; the surrounding Arabic word or grammatical construction supplies the meaning.

Why did final kaf change after normalization?

NFKC or NFKD may fold this compatibility form to the base kāf. Arabic text shaping can then display a final shape again when the letter's position calls for it.

Can I send final kaf by itself?

You can, but it gives the recipient a letterform without a complete word meaning. Its role becomes clear in the surrounding Arabic text.
