What ﯕ means

It marks the ng sound at a word’s beginning. In traditions that use the base letter ڭ, ﯕ is its initial joining form and represents /ŋ/, as in the final sound of “sing.”

Arabic-script communities added letters for sounds Arabic did not have. Adaptations for Persian began in the 8th or 9th century; Malay Jawi added letters for p, c, g, ng and ny. The Terengganu Stone, dated 1303, is an early landmark in Malay Arabic-script writing, though it does not establish one universal shape for this letter.

The related ng letters belong to distinct spelling traditions. U+06AD ڭ is documented for Uyghur, Kazakh, Moroccan Arabic, early Jawi and early Persian. Modern Jawi uses ڠ for nga; ﯕ is specifically the initial presentation form of ڭ.

Should I type ﯕ or ڭ?

For new text, type ڭ and let the text shape it.

FBD5 is a compatibility presentation form kept for legacy text. Ordinary Arabic-script text uses the base letter; the text engine selects an initial, medial, final or isolated glyph from its position. Use FBD5 when preserving a source that already has it or when an exact code point is required.

Why does ﯕ look different in different text?

Its appearance depends on the encoded character and the font.

Because ﯕ already encodes an initial form, it can keep that shape even where neighboring letters would normally determine how it joins. Fonts may also draw its dots and joining stroke differently; an incomplete Arabic font may show a box or fallback glyph. A broken connection can come from the encoded form or from font support.

A specialist spelling character used inside Arabic-script words, not as a conversational reaction.

Alone, it can look like a broken or accidental letter.

Should I use ﯕ in new Arabic-script text?

No. Use the base letter ڭ and let text shaping choose its initial, medial, final or isolated form. FBD5 is for legacy text or an exact-character requirement.

Why does ﯕ stay in an initial shape?

It encodes a positional presentation form. It can keep that shape instead of letting neighboring letters determine the connection, so the text may not behave like ordinary Arabic-script writing.

Is ﯕ the Jawi ng letter?

It is related, but modern Jawi uses ڠ for nga. ﯕ is the initial presentation form of ڭ, a different Arabic-script ng letter documented in early Jawi and other traditions.
