21/631

ﭤ is the joined initial shape of Sindhi letter ٿ. For ordinary Unicode text, enter ٿ and let the text shaper choose its position-specific shape. Sindhi uses this extended Arabic-script letter for a consonant commonly transliterated as th; ﭤ is a legacy presentation form.

Text symbol

What ﭤ means

Use ٿ in ordinary text; shaping supplies the joined form.

Unicode maps ﭤ to base letter ٿ as a compatibility form. “Initial” means the letter begins a joining sequence and connects to the next character; its shape changes with its position. Keep the base letter in text you edit, search, or exchange.

Sindhi writing predates Unicode. An account of Arabic-Sindhi writing places early evidence around 864 CE, using related Arabic letters rather than the modern dotted set. Accounts of al-Biruni describe later additions. In 1853, British administration standardized a 52-letter Perso-Arabic Sindhi alphabet for official use, print, and schooling.

What does the dotted Sindhi letter mean?

It represents a Sindhi consonant, commonly transliterated th.

In Sindhi, ٿ appears in words such as ٿَنڀُ (“pillar”) and ٿيلهو (“bag”). Its added dots distinguish a sound in Sindhi’s writing system that the core Arabic alphabet does not represent with a separate letter.

Sindhi also uses additions such as ٻ, ٺ, ڦ, and ڙ to represent sounds in its own orthography. The language has been written in several local scripts; its Perso-Arabic alphabet became the official standard in the colonial period.

A technical Sindhi-script form for legacy data; ordinary text uses the base letter ٿ.

ﭤ represents one joining position; it is not the letter’s general form.

Questions people ask

2

Is ﭤ the same letter as ٿ?

Yes. ﭤ is the initial presentation form of ٿ. Use ٿ in ordinary text and let shaping choose its position-specific form.

Why does my Sindhi text show as a box?

The font may not include the Sindhi glyph. Choose a font with Sindhi coverage; changing the character will not add missing font support.
