arabic letter yeh final form

Arabic Yeh (Final Form)

130/140

ﻲ is a pre-shaped final form of Arabic yeh, not a separate letter or word. For ordinary Arabic, type ي and let the text system choose the shape from its position in the word. The letter tradition is much older than this computer-era compatibility form: Arabic script developed gradually from Nabataean writing.

Text symbol

What ﻲ means

No; it is a pre-shaped final form of Arabic yeh. Ordinary Arabic text uses ي, and the text system selects its shape from context. ﻲ preserves one positional shape for compatibility with older text and encodings.

Arabic script developed gradually from Nabataean cursive, a connected writing tradition used from the 2nd century BCE to 4th century CE. Its final letter forms helped make writing faster, including for business. An early Arabic inscription from the 4th century CE shows Nabataean-derived letter shapes; inscriptions with a full repertoire describable as Arabic appear by the late 5th century CE. That history belongs to the script’s development; it does not show that this exact computer-era form existed then.

What does a standalone ﻲ mean?

Usually, it is a preserved shape or conversion artifact. Read the surrounding word and language to identify the underlying letter; this character by itself does not establish a special message.

Why do Arabic Persian and Urdu yeh look different?

These languages use related but distinct yeh spellings. Arabic normally writes dotted ي, though some calligraphic styles omit the dots in final or isolated positions. Persian normally uses dotless ی there. In Urdu, ی and ے are distinct letters with different vowel values; their standard distinction followed changes in Urdu orthography in the early 20th century.

The forms share a related letter tradition, but their spellings and language roles are not interchangeable. A similar outline alone cannot identify which character belongs in a word.

Technical and low-context: it usually signals a preserved positional form or legacy text.

For ordinary Arabic, use ي; the text system supplies the final shape.

1

Why does ﻲ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
