arabic letter yeh initial form

Arabic Letter Yeh Initial Form

131/140

ﻳ is Arabic yeh in its initial joining shape: the form used at the start of a word when the next letter connects. It is not a separate alphabet letter. For ordinary Arabic, type the base letter ي and let text software choose the shape. Compatibility normalization can turn ﻳ back into ي.

Text symbol

What ﻳ means

No—ﻳ is the initial joining form of Arabic yeh. Yeh can represent the consonant y, as in English yes, or a long i vowel. This form joins to the following letter in a word.

The Arabic script developed from Nabataean Aramaic, part of the Aramaic writing tradition. An Arabic-language inscription at ʿEn ʿAvdat, dated 88/9–125/6 CE, uses the Nabataean alphabet. Nabataeo-Arabic forms developed between the third and fifth centuries CE; a full Arabic letter set appears by the late fifth century CE. Yeh belongs to the older Semitic yod family. These dates trace the script's development, not this exact printed form.

Why did ﻳ change when I typed it?

Arabic text normally stores the letter ي and shapes it from context. Depending on which neighboring letters connect, text software displays an isolated, initial, medial, or final form. ﻳ is a compatibility presentation form, encoded for older text interchange rather than ordinary Arabic typing.

If processing changes ﻳ to ي, compatibility normalization may have mapped the presentation form to its base letter. Text shaping then draws the form that fits its neighbors and the font.

Which yeh form belongs to my language?

Arabic, Persian, and Urdu use related yeh letters with different spelling rules. Standard Arabic writes ي. Persian uses ی, usually without dots in isolated and final positions. Urdu writes ی and ے as separate letters; they typically represent the i and e vowel sounds.

These are language-specific letter choices in related Arabic-script traditions, not interchangeable spellings. A similar-looking character can be the wrong letter for the language you're writing.

Technical and neutral: a compatibility display form; ordinary Arabic text uses the base letter.

Use ي for ordinary Arabic spelling; use ﻳ only when the exact compatibility character is required.
