What 𖦠 means
It represents the Bamum syllable pu.
The Phase-E sign is also recorded with the reading puq. These are syllabic readings: the surrounding Bamum text shows how the sound fits into a word.
Bamum writing began around 1896 with signs for objects and actions. As the system changed, signs were simplified and given sound values, so this letter belongs to a sound-based stage rather than standing for a picture or an English word.
Why was Bamum writing created?
It began as a memory aid for writing Bamum.
King Ibrahim Njoya worked with palace scribes on a system that began as a memory aid and developed into writing for the Bamum language. Its signs changed as the system became simpler and more sound-based.
Phase E is an older revision, before the 1910 overhaul that led toward the later A-ka-u-ku form. Phase-D Puq is a separate historical character; the shared romanized reading does not make the two signs interchangeable.
Historical and specialist: this form belongs in work with older Bamum writing, such as transcription or script study.
A box usually means the font lacks this glyph; the character in the text may still be intact.
