bamum letter phase-e pum

Bamum Letter Phase-E Pum

402/569

𖦑 is a letter in Phase E of the Bamum script. In Bamum spelling its role depends on the signs around it; by itself, it is best read as a script sample, not a standard chat reaction. Its Phase-E name Pum corresponds to the “o” value in Phase F, showing how the writing system changed over time.

What 𖦑 means

It is a historical Bamum letter, not a reaction symbol.

Bamum is a language written in this script. The writing project began around 1896 under King Ibrahim Njoya and palace scribes. Its first phase used hundreds of logographic signs—marks that could stand for words or ideas—and the system was repeatedly reduced and reorganized. No significant Phase-A works are known to survive from 1896–1899; surviving 1906–1908 material includes letters and an agricultural calendar.

The script first served as a memory aid for objects and actions, then for letters and records. By Phase E, it had gone through repeated redesigns. A 2002 study describes the Vai syllabary—a writing system with signs for syllables—as a possible stimulus for Bamum’s later syllabic design, not proof of descent. The later Phase-F overhaul, called A-ka-u-ku, came in 1910. Phase-E Pum corresponds to the “o” value in Phase F; this records a value across revisions, not an English translation of “Pum.” Historical Bamum Supplement forms are mainly used by specialist linguists and historians.

What does it mean when someone sends 𖦑?

A lone 𖦑 is best read as a reference to Bamum writing.

Inside a Bamum word, the surrounding spelling gives the letter its role. As of 2026, learning and digital projects offer Bamum lessons, reading material, and keyboard resources. In ordinary chat the character is obscure; add a short label if the recipient may not recognize a script sample.

Linguistic, archival, or heritage-coded; outside those settings, it may look like an unexplained text character.

A lone character gives no standard reaction to decode; label it as Bamum if the recipient may not know the script.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𖦑 appear as a box?

The app’s font lacks a Bamum glyph. Switch to a font with Bamum support or an app that uses one; the character remains the same letter.

Is Phase-E Pum the same as Bamum o?

Not as a direct name swap. Pum names the Phase-E form; the cross-phase note gives the “o” value for Phase F.
