What 𖧴 means
It is a historical Bamum writing sign from Phase E.
“Shoq” is the transcription label for its Bamum value. Read it within a Bamum word or passage; the surrounding spelling supplies its role.
How does Phase E fit into Bamum writing?
It is one stage in a script that changed through successive revisions.
Developed under King Njoya around 1896, the Bamum script was made to write the Bamum language and keep kingdom records. Early versions mixed picture-like and word signs with signs for syllables; later revisions moved toward a syllabary, a system in which each sign represents a syllable. The oldest surviving manuscript of the first version dates to 1897.
Phase E took shape around 1907–1908 and was used for a Bamum Bible translation. The earlier Phase-D Shoq form is 𖥜; in Phase F, Sho 𖨩 combines with ꛰ for the related glottalized value—a pronunciation made with a brief closure at the vocal folds. Phase G uses ꛖ for modern Sho, also paired with ꛰ for that value. These are related spellings, not substitutes for a form in a text from another phase.
