bamum letter puae

Bamum Letter Puae

56/88

ꛗ represents the Bamum syllable puae in the script’s final A-ka-u-ku form. The Bamum script took shape in Cameroon to write the Bamum language and later became a focus of cultural and educational revival. If the glyph appears as a box, the font lacks Bamum support.

What ꛗ means

It represents the Bamum syllable puae.

King Ibrahim Njoya and court collaborators began shaping Bamum writing around 1896–1897, moving from pictographs and word signs toward a syllabary, where each sign represents a spoken syllable. It served practical needs such as palace administration, education, history, maps, records, and law. It developed while Arabic and Latin writing were also entering the region, but Bamum followed its own path.

By 1910, revisions had produced the script’s final form, called A-ka-u-ku. Colonial suppression had pushed teaching and printing into decline by the 1930s. Bamum’s shift from word signs to syllables parallels the development of the Vai script; that parallel does not mean Vai gave rise to Bamum.

Why does ꛗ show as a box?

A font without Bamum coverage cannot draw ꛗ.

ꛗ is text rendered by the app’s chosen font. Unicode-style romanization labels it puae; the Woodard keyboard convention labels the same character po. The difference between puae and po is in the naming convention, not in the character.

In Bamum spelling, combining marks and sequences of letters can change a base sign’s syllable value. The script runs left to right. Since 2007, revival work has focused on teaching, archives, and digital entry; in 2022, the Endangered Alphabets Project began a documented revitalization collaboration.

Its natural setting is Bamum-language writing, study, or cultural heritage work.

Without a Bamum-capable font, ꛗ may appear as a box.

1

Why does ꛗ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
