What ꛪ means
In a Bamum word, it is a syllable; in a numeral, it stands for five.
Work on the Bamum script began around 1896. Surviving letters and an agricultural calendar date to 1906–1908; a 1910 overhaul produced its compact syllabic set. King Njoya’s court developed it to write Bamum and handle administration. Colonial suppression later pushed it from institutional writing toward heritage use. Scholars compare its syllabic design with the Vai script, another African writing system, though Bamum’s characters were newly made.
