Text symbol

What ৵ means

In Bengali fractions, it supplies numerator 2.

With ৹, the sign for sixteenths, ৵৹ records 2/16. In old rupee accounts, that meant two annas, an old currency unit; 16 annas made one rupee.

A Bengali grammar by Halhed describes the rupee–anna relationship in 1778. Related fraction systems include North Indic notation and signs in the Odia script. India’s 1957 move to decimal currency displaced anna accounting.

Is ৵ still used for money? No; it is historical Bengali notation.

It marks a fraction numerator, not Bengali digit ২.

Why does ৵ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
