What ় means
Enter the base letter first, then the nukta.
Use ড ড়, ঢ ঢ়, or য য়. The dotted circle in is a display aid, not something to type.
Your Bengali layout may offer the completed letters directly. Unicode supports both those single-character letters and base-plus-mark sequences, so matching appearances do not guarantee matching underlying text.
What does Bengali nukta do?
It distinguishes letters with different consonant sounds.
In Bengali, also called Bangla, the dot helps distinguish established letters rather than acting as a separate letter. ড় and ঢ় became established during the 19th century standardization of printed Bengali.
An isolated nukta has no pronunciation of its own. If the dot appears detached, check that it follows the intended base letter.
Part of Bengali spelling, not a decorative dot or a conversational reaction.
Do not attach it to an arbitrary letter and assume you have made a standard Bengali spelling.

Don't confuse it with
2ড় A complete Bengali letter with an r-like sound, not the dot alone; do not add another nukta.
Questions people ask
1Does normalization turn the sequence into one character?
No. Unicode normalization, which puts equivalent text into a consistent form, leaves these dotted letters as base-plus-nukta sequences rather than recombining them into single characters.
