What ㆪ means

It extends basic Bopomofo ㄧ by nasalizing its vowel. Bopomofo’s basic set teaches Mandarin pronunciation. In ㄊㆪˊ, ˊ is a tone mark after ㆪ.

Taiwanese phonetic symbols adapt Mandarin Bopomofo to add sounds for Minnan (including Taiwanese Hokkien) and Hakka. Chu Chao-hsiang developed the extension in 1946; the 24-character Minnan and Hakka set is dated to 1948.

Specialist phonetic notation for Taiwanese Hokkien pronunciation.

Plain ㄧ lacks ㆪ’s nasal sound.

1

Why does ㆪ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
