What ㆨ means
The tongue rises between the “ee” and “oo” positions.
Taiwanese Phonetic Symbols grew from Mandarin Bopomofo in 1946. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education included ㆨ in Fangyin, its Taiwanese pronunciation system, in 1998.
Some Quanzhou-leaning Taiwanese descriptions use it to distinguish this vowel from the “ee”-like and “oo”-like vowels. That distinction varies by dialect, so ㆨ is not a universal spelling across Taiwanese speech.
