What ╺ means
Use it to start a thick horizontal line.
Imagine each character sitting in an equally sized rectangular space, called a cell. ╺ leaves the left half blank and draws from the centre to the right edge. In ╺, the middle piece continues the line and the last piece ends it. These are drawing components, not an arrow or punctuation.
Why do the pieces sometimes fail to join?
The font and spacing must let their edges meet.
Use a monospaced font, where characters have equal widths, that supports these line symbols. Extra spacing or a substitute font can leave gaps or uneven strokes. Repeating ╺ alone leaves a blank half-cell between strokes; use for the continuous middle of a line.

3Worth knowing
- Box-drawing characters let text screens display frames and diagrams before 1990. The IBM PC’s character set included line pieces; early videotex services also distinguished thin and thick lines.
