buhid letter ba

Buhid letter ba

11/20

ᝊ is the Buhid letter for ba, a consonant written with an inherent a vowel. In Buhid spelling, ᝒ above it shifts the reading to bi or be, and ᝓ below it to bu or bo. If it appears as a box, the font may lack a Buhid glyph.

Text symbol

What ᝊ means

It writes ba with an inherent a vowel. Buhid uses an abugida, a writing system where consonant letters carry a default vowel, so ᝊ spells a syllable rather than a bare b. Type a vowel sign after it: ᝒ appears above ᝊ for bi or be, and ᝓ below it for bu or bo.

The vowel sign is a separate character in text, even when a font joins the pair into one visual syllable; the display varies by font and renderer. Buhid leaves syllable-final consonants unwritten, so ᝊ is a syllable unit, not an alphabetic b that stands alone.

Where does Buhid writing come from?

Buhid is one of four traditional Philippine scripts. It belongs to a writing tradition ultimately derived from Brahmi, an ancient South Asian script. Pallava writing from South India reached the Philippines; one proposed route passed through Kawi, a script used in western Java, between the 10th and 14th centuries.

Buhid and Hanunóo are Mindoro scripts; Tagbanwa belongs to Palawan. Buhid and Baybayin are related, but Unicode notes that direct descent is not established. Their shared ba label does not make ᝊ and ᜊ interchangeable.

What has Buhid writing been used for?

A 1994 Mindoro account describes Buhid writing on bamboo and urukay, a rhythmic recitation used to teach and entertain.

The 2026 Unicode edition describes the traditional Philippine scripts as in limited use; Buhid references also note efforts to encourage younger learners.

Why is ᝊ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
