What ᝋ means
It writes the syllable ma: m plus the built-in a vowel. Buhid consonant letters carry an inherent vowel; this kind of writing system is called an abugida. In a word, neighboring letters supply the meaning. Alone, ᝋ gives the reading ma, not a complete message.
Buhid vowel signs change that built-in vowel: ᝒ above gives i/e, while ᝓ below gives u/o. With ᝋ, they form ᝋᝒ and ᝋᝓ. Buhid fonts often join these marks to the base letter in one combined shape, called a ligature.
Why did Buhid writers use bamboo?
Bamboo carried poetry, songs, and letters. 20th-century accounts describe Mangyan writers scratching Buhid on bamboo with a knife or stylus for urukay, rhythmic poetry used to teach and entertain, as well as songs and correspondence. A UP Diliman project in 2017–2018 supported children’s Buhid-language education.
Buhid belongs to a writing family descended from Brahmi, an ancient South Asian script. South Indian forms may have reached the Philippines by way of Kawi, a historical Javanese script, between the 10th and 14th centuries; the route is uncertain. The Tagalog script, also called Baybayin, fell out of normal use by the mid-1700s. Buhid is related to Tagalog, but direct descent is not established.
Neutral on its own; ᝋ reads ma, while the word supplies the meaning.
Do not label ᝋ as Baybayin; Baybayin ma is ᜋ.

1Why does ᝋ show as a box?
Your font cannot display Buhid. As of 2026, choose a font that supports the script; if vowel-marked letters still look broken, that font may not form Buhid’s joined letter shapes. The stored characters remain unchanged.
