Buhid Letter Ya

13/20

ᝌ is the Buhid letter ya, a syllable pronounced like “ya”: a y sound followed by an inherent a vowel. If someone sends it alone, treat it as writing or a Buhid reference and ask for context. Traditionally, Mangyan writing carried messages, records, and poems on bamboo.

Text symbol

What ᝌ means

Read it as ya when it stands alone.

ᝌ is one syllable: a y sound followed by its built-in a vowel. The Latin transcription is ya.

The Buhid vowel signs change the syllable: ᝒ gives the i/e series and ᝓ the u/o series. Each mark follows ᝌ in text order, though it appears above or below the base letter.

Is ᝌ Baybayin?

No: ᝌ is Buhid, a related but distinct script.

Buhid, Hanunóo, Tagbanwa, and Tagalog Baybayin are related Philippine scripts, but their signs are not interchangeable. ᝌ belongs specifically to Buhid.

Use Buhid when identifying ᝌ in a lesson, tattoo, or museum label. As of 2026, community teaching treats Buhid as living writing, while some public revivals present related scripts as broad heritage emblems; that framing can blur the distinct communities behind them.

How old is Buhid writing?

Its first use is unknown.

As of 2026, no date isolates the first use of ᝌ. A. Schadenberg collected inscribed bamboo tubes on Mindoro in 1894; a later collection preserves items assembled 1904–1939. Bamboo decays, so these collections document use, not a starting point.

The wider Philippine script family may have reached the islands through western Java between the 10th and 14th centuries CE, though the route is uncertain. In traditional Mangyan use, writing carried messages, records, and poems carved on bamboo. In later preservation work, primers and digital fonts support revitalization.

Letter-like and script-specific; in a cultural display, it identifies a particular writing tradition.

Do not call it Baybayin by default; identify it as Buhid.
