What ᝂ means
It is Buhid’s independent vowel u.
Buhid consonants default to an “a” sound; an independent vowel starts a syllable without a consonant.
Buhid, also called Surat Buhid, and Hanunóo are related scripts used on Mindoro. The wider Philippine family draws on southern Indian Pallava scripts, perhaps through Kawi, an old Javanese script, in the 10th–14th centuries. The route is uncertain. Bamboo writing decays quickly, leaving few early specimens. As of 2026, heritage projects preserve and teach Buhid digitally.
