What ᝀ means
It writes “a” on its own, for a syllable without an opening consonant.
Buhid vs Baybayin: related, not identical
Buhid and Tagalog Baybayin are related Philippine scripts, though Buhid may not descend directly from Baybayin. South Indian Pallava writing may have reached the Philippines via Kawi, an old script used around Java, between the 10th and 14th centuries; the route is uncertain.
Anthropologist Schadenberg documented Mangyan scripts around 1890. A 1994 account describes messages written on bamboo and urukay, Buhid rhythmic poetry chanted to teach or entertain.
A 2014 paper describes teaching and preservation. Bamboo carving favors angular forms; older samples can be rounded.
