buhid vowel sign u

Buhid Vowel Sign U

20/20

ᝓ is a Buhid vowel mark: paired with a consonant, it changes that syllable’s inherent a to u or o. Buhid, also written Buid, is a Mangyan script. Rendering is font-dependent: some Buhid fonts join the sign to its consonant.

What ᝓ means

It supplies the consonant’s u/o vowel.

Buhid consonants carry an inherent a. Enter a consonant first, then ᝓ; the sign is drawn below its base, and the syllable is read with u or o as the word requires.

ᝓ is a combining mark, so it needs a consonant to modify. When a syllable starts with a vowel, Buhid uses a separate letter for that vowel.

When does the Buhid record begin?

The surviving dates show use, not a starting point.

A 2014 Mangyan Heritage Center presentation describes the written record as thin because bamboo decays. It records Mangyan syllabic signatures as late as 1792 and bamboo inscriptions collected in 1894; neither date marks when the script began.

Philippine scripts are linked to Brahmi, an ancient South Asian writing tradition, possibly through Kawi, an older Southeast Asian script, between the 10th–14th centuries. That route is uncertain. Buhid shares features with Hanunóo, Tagbanwa, and Tagalog scripts, but this does not establish a direct ancestor for ᝓ.

Where did Mangyan writing appear?

It served practical and cultural settings.

A 1994 account from Mindoro describes Buhid urukay, songs chanted with guitar for teaching and entertainment, and distinguishes them from the neighboring Hanunóo ambahan tradition. The same account describes Mangyan writing on bamboo containers, instruments, baskets, homes, and trail-side bamboo.

A 2014 presentation describes younger people’s declining interest and revival efforts through primers and community teaching. These are contexts for the wider writing tradition; ᝓ itself remains a spelling mark inside a syllable.

Does ᝓ always stand for u?

No. It can mark either the Buhid u or o vowel; the surrounding word tells you which reading fits.
