What ꩘ means
It marks the number eight in Cham writing.
The spoken Cham word for eight is written in Latin letters as dalapan; ꩘ is the native numeral sign.
Cham numerals also form larger values: ꩘꩐ is 80, and ꩑꩘ is 18.
How did Cham writing develop?
Cham writing grew from South Asia’s Brahmi script tradition.
The Cham script developed within the Brahmi-derived script family of South Asia, with forms linked to Pallava-Grantha writing from southern India. Cham-language inscriptions are attested from around the fourth century.
The traditional Cham system called Akhar Thrah has its own native numerals. An Old Cham stone inscription dated Śaka 1036, a year in the Śaka era, uses dalapan in a passage listing quantities.
Digit choice varies across Cham communities. Native Cham numerals are especially associated with Eastern Cham writing; some Western Cham materials use Arabic-derived digits. Cham texts also use the familiar 0–9 digits through Vietnamese influence. The value remains eight when the numeral set changes.
Why can it show as a box?
The font may not include a Cham character.
꩘ is text whose shape comes from font support. If the active font has no Cham glyph, the app may show a missing-character box or switch to another font automatically.
Use it in Cham writing, or when you intentionally choose Cham numerals.

1Why does ꩘ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
