cherokee letter na

Cherokee syllable Na

31/92

Ꮎ represents the Cherokee syllable “na,” a sound written inside Cherokee words. It is one sign in Sequoyah’s syllabary, created to write spoken Cherokee.

Text symbol

What Ꮎ means

It represents one Cherokee syllable: “na.”

Sequoyah developed a set of signs for spoken Cherokee rather than assigning one sign to each word. An archaeological study interprets carvings at Red Bird River Shelter as experimental writing connected with his work in the early-nineteenth-century; the syllabary was complete by 1821.

The Cherokee Nation adopted the syllabary in 1825, and the Cherokee Phoenix printed Cherokee and English in 1828. Samuel Worcester and collaborators adapted some printed forms from Roman type, but those shapes do not give the signs English letter sounds.

Ꮎ is a syllable used in Cherokee writing.

Ꮎ alone does not mean “hello”; the Cherokee greeting is ᎣᏏᏲ.

1

Why does Ꮎ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Cherokee block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
