What Ꮨ means
It represents the Cherokee syllable “ti.”
Cherokee uses a syllabary: a writing system whose signs represent spoken syllables, like “ti,” rather than single sounds. A word is read by joining those units, so this letter alone gives a sound, not a full word meaning.
The script’s development is dated to 1815–1821. A proposed identification of Cherokee writing at Kentucky’s Red Bird River Shelter was challenged by a 2019 reanalysis, so the shelter does not settle when the syllabary first appeared.
Why was the Cherokee syllabary made?
To write spoken Cherokee with signs for its syllables. Sequoyah developed the Cherokee syllabary after first trying a sign for each word; he then built a system around recurring syllables in Cherokee speech. It gave written messages a way to travel beyond the speaker.
The Cherokee Nation formally adopted the script in 1825. From 1828 to 1834, the Cherokee Phoenix printed Cherokee beside English, carrying national news, law, religious writing, and arguments over removal.
In 1827, handwritten forms were adapted for type. A 2016 study documents the syllabary’s influence on later script projects and discusses a proposed Cherokee–Vai connection in Liberia. That is a historical connection between writing systems, not another meaning for Ꮨ.
How do I type Ꮨ?
Use a phonetic layout or a one-key Cherokee layout.
On a Cherokee phonetic keyboard, enter “ti”; it converts sound-based input to Ꮨ. The Cherokee Nation’s one-key layout assigns one keystroke per syllable, so the key depends on which layout is enabled.
The uppercase form Ꮨ and lowercase form ꮨ are separate characters. Their display depends on font coverage; 2024 web-support testing reported missing small Cherokee forms appearing as boxes.

A lone Ꮨ gives a syllable, not a whole word’s meaning.

1Why does Ꮨ show as a box?
A font is missing the character. In 2024, web-support testing reported boxes when a Cherokee font lacked the needed glyph, including small forms. A box is a font-coverage problem, not another Cherokee letter.
