What Ᏸ means
It represents the syllable “ye” in Cherokee writing. It is not a standalone English word.
The Cherokee syllabary is a writing system in which each sign represents a syllable. Sequoyah developed it during 1815–1821. One disputed archaeological interpretation reads inscriptions at Red Bird River Shelter as experiments with the syllabary.
Sequoyah’s system let Cherokee speakers record their language and communicate across distance. It came to be used in government, the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper, religious books, and language teaching.

Worth knowing
- Cherokee writing may have influenced James Evans when he developed Cree syllabics. The two systems are related historically, but their signs are not interchangeable.
Questions people ask
1Why does Ᏸ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
