What ꮸ means
ꮸ represents the Cherokee syllable called “tsv.”
Sequoyah developed the Cherokee syllabary between 1815 and 1821 to write spoken Cherokee. The Cherokee Nation adopted it in 1825. Print design work was finalized in 1827, and the Cherokee Phoenix began publishing in Cherokee and English in 1828. The writing system supported communication and literacy; the newspaper also helped Cherokees stay connected during forced removal.
The syllable's role stayed the same as writing moved from manuscript to print and digital text. The syllabary remains in use in the 21st century, including in Oklahoma and North Carolina. ꮸ is the lowercase counterpart of Ꮸ. Older Cherokee text is often caseless or set in uppercase-looking type; Unicode added lowercase forms in Unicode 8.0 to support modern casing.
