What ⊙ means
Context names the operation. Between arrays, ⊙ may mean entry-by-entry multiplication, a direct product, or an author-defined operation. In diagrams, it marks an arrow aimed toward you; the related points inward.
Strictly technical; in ordinary chat, it looks like unexplained notation or a mistaken sun.
For the Sun, use ; ⊙ may be read as an operator.

1Why does ⊙ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
