What ⊗ means
In algebra, ⊗ is the tensor product symbol. It combines mathematical spaces, vectors, or maps.
A math text from 1894 uses for a product; the path to circled ⊗ was still unresolved as of 2020.
Specialist math notation; surrounding context decides.
Do not assume ordinary multiplication.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⊗ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
