What 〶 means
It marks a post office. As of 2026, Japan’s Geospatial Information Authority uses a circled 〒 in its map legend for post offices and branches. Unicode describes 〶 as a glyph variant of 〒 but identifies it for Type B electronics, not postal use.
A similar circled 〒 served as an electrical conformity mark on appliances; the Type B mark was abolished in July 1995. The plain 〒 became the Communications Ministry’s logo in 1887.
Technical; context changes the reading.
On an appliance, read an old conformity mark, not a post office.

1Why does 〶 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
