What 再 means
再 maps to 再: in Chinese, “again,” “twice,” or “second time”; in Japanese compounds, 再 means “re-/again”; in Korean Hanja (Chinese characters used in Korean), 再 can mean “again” or “second.” Those meanings belong to 再, not 再 alone.
Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 assigns source entry T3-227B. The separate Unicode code lets conversion return to that entry. The older character 再 appears in inscriptions on oracle bones (animal bones used for divination) and bronze objects. For ordinary writing, use 再.
Will normalization preserve 再?
No: normalization changes it to 再.
Normalization is software’s standard way to put equivalent Unicode text into one consistent form; it can erase this code-point distinction.

Questions people ask
1Why does 再 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
