What 勉 means
Read it as 勉, not as a different word.
In Chinese, 勉 can mean making an effort, urging or encouraging. Japanese uses it in 勉強 (“study”).
Taiwan's CNS 11643-1992 standard lists this source form as T6-3558. Unicode keeps it as a separate character so text converted to that standard and back can retain the same entry.
Why does 勉 turn into 勉?
Normalization can merge its code point with 勉.
Unicode maps 勉 to 勉 and defines 勉 followed by UFE01, an invisible variation selector that requests a particular written form, as the standardized sequence for this variant. Text normalization (rewriting equivalent characters into a standard form) can collapse the separate code point to 勉.
For ordinary writing, use 勉; keep 勉 or that sequence only when software needs the exact source variant.

Questions people ask
1Why does 勉 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
