What 吆 means
For the standard Unicode mapping, read it as 吆. In Chinese, 吆 (yāo) means to call aloud and appears in 吆喝 (yāohe), a phrase for shouting or calling out to sell goods.
Why were two source forms attached to 吆?
Two standards sources were once grouped under one compatibility entry. Characters in this supplement let text from Taiwan's CNS 11643-1992 set convert to Unicode and back while preserving an older source distinction.
A 2018 proposal reported the mouth-plus-么 form 口么 in Sawndip, a traditional way to write Zhuang, and in Longao and Yunao dialect sources, with readings distinct from 吆. Hong Kong's HKSCS-2016 lists H-9AC8 as 吆 for 吆. Unicode 18.0 lists Taiwan's T3-233C source separately as 䶸 , while retaining 吆 for Hong Kong's source.
Rare and technical: this is a source-preserving text character, not a separate everyday word.
If the source matters, normalization can merge this form with 吆.

Questions people ask
1Why does 吆 change to 吆 in normalized text?
It is a compatibility mapping: Unicode normalization reduces 吆 to 吆. For the documented glyph distinction, Unicode lists the standardized variant sequence 吆 followed by variation selector UFE00.
