What 善 means
It preserves a legacy entry, not a separate word.
The Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi traces the character family to 羊 (“sheep”) and speech, glossing it “auspicious.” Later writing settled into 善, also used for virtue, skill and praise.
Unicode’s source label T6-472A links it to Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992, a Chinese-character code. Its supplementary planes are numbered sections whose entries can convert to Unicode and back.
Does normalization keep 善 distinct?
No; canonical normalization turns it into 善.
This text-cleanup step can erase the source distinction. Unicode also registers 善 UFE00 as its variant sequence; its display depends on font and software support.

1Why does 善 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
