What 夢 means
It represents 夢, the Han character for “dream.” The older form 夢 appears in oracle-bone inscriptions—early writing on shells and bones; one interpretation depicts a sleeper dreaming. In Chinese and Japanese, “dream” also means hope or ambition.
Why does 夢 have a separate code?
It preserves Taiwan’s source mapping. CNS 11643, Taiwan’s character-encoding standard, assigns it source code T6-515E in Plane 6, enabling conversions to restore that origin.
Use 夢 in ordinary text; 夢 preserves a legacy-encoding distinction.
