What 汎 means
It preserves a Taiwan source slot; 汎 is the Unicode mapping.
A 2024 entry in Taiwan's CNS 11643 character database places 汎 at plane 6, position 252E, and gives its Mandarin reading as wán (ㄨㄢˊ). Unicode 18.0 says the CJK compatibility supplement preserves CNS 11643-1992 characters for round-trip conversion: text can move into Unicode and back while keeping its source slot.
The Unicode 18.0 chart maps 汎 to 汎. In a 2016 submission to the Ideographic Research Group, the Unicode group that reviews Han characters, Henry Chan argued this match is wrong: the CNS entry reads wán, while 汎 is read fàn, and he proposed 汍 instead. This was an individual objection, not an adopted mapping change.
Will normalization preserve this exact form?
No. Canonical normalization can change it to 汎.
Text normalization makes equivalent characters consistent; here it can replace U2F8FA with 汎. If you need the Taiwan source distinction in a record, preserve the original code point before normalizing.
A specialist character for Taiwan's CNS text interchange, not a casual chat symbol.
Normalization can replace 汎 with 汎 and hide its separate source identity.

Questions people ask
1Why does 汎 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
