What 海 means
For lossless conversion with Taiwan’s CNS 11643 character-code set. The Unicode chart traces its source to T4-2A25, in the 1992 edition’s fourth plane. The sea character 海 has a much longer history: it appears in bronze inscriptions and bamboo-and-silk manuscripts from ancient Chu, a Chinese state.
Why does normalization turn it into 海?
It becomes 海. Every Unicode normalization form maps it to 海, so the separate code-point identity can be lost. The Unicode 17.0 chart also records variation sequence 6D77 FE01, which can request this glyph form; its sample does not dictate font design.

Questions people ask
1Why does 海 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
