災 compatibility form

281/542

災 is a compatibility form mapped to 災, the Chinese character for disaster or calamity. Its separate code point lets Taiwan’s CNS 11643 text round-trip through Unicode; compatibility normalization converts it back to 災.

Text symbol

What 災 means

It is a compatibility form mapped to 災, the Chinese character for disaster.

Taiwan’s CNS 11643-1992 character-encoding standard records it at source position 6-2C60; a variant-character list published in 2007 also includes it. Unicode kept a separate code point so text converted from CNS can be converted back without losing that source position. Compatibility normalization (NFKC) maps 災 to 災.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 災 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the CJK Compatibility Ideographs Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
